How to Pray

Resources to help you get more prayer into your day.

Prayer changes everything

5 Basic Types of Prayer

  1. Praise and Thanksgiving - Praise and thanksgiving are the primary ways we give daily adoration and worship to God.
  2. Confession - Consistent confession is the primary way we receive God's forgiveness and maintain a Spirit-filled life.
  3. Petition - Petition is the type of prayer in which we present our individual needs and desires to God.
  4. Intercession - Intercession is the type of prayer that focuses on the needs of others.
  5. Meditation - The act of reflecting on God's Word and quietly listening for His still, small voice.

Categories of Potential Sin

Confession is a good ingredient to include in our prayer practice. The Bible tells us that sin can hinder our prayers and that God is eager to hear our confession and forgive our sin.

Here are some common categories of sin to think through as you make your confession to the Lord.

Sins of thoughts and attitudes

"in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’” (Matthew 15:9)

"We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ," (2 Corinthians 10:5)

Sins of Speech

"But he answered them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah." (Matthew 12:39)

"From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so." (James 3:10)

“‘You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain." (Deuteronomy 5:11)

Relational Sins

"So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift." (Matthew 5:23-24)

Sins of Commission and Transgression

"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." (1 John 1:9)

Sins of Omission

"So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin." (James 4:17)

Reflection Questions

  • What prayers, thoughts, or feelings have you hidden from God?
  • In what circumstances are you most tempted to stop talking to God? If you were to talk with Him in those circumstances, what would you want to hear from Him?
  • What do I need to know that I already know?
  • What is interfering or hindering me in knowing Jesus more?
  • What if anything do you need to say to God that you have never said to Him?
